A 2009 Bosch Start-Up Became an Independent Division Supplying More Than 100 Bike Brands
Bosch eBike Systems started inside the Bosch Group in 2009, showed its first drive at Eurobike 2010 and began series production in February 2011.
Bosch eBike Systems has been a separate division of Robert Bosch GmbH since 1 January 2020 and is led by CEO Claus Fleischer. Bosch does not report e-bike revenue or headcount separately; the group as a whole had sales of 91 billion euros and about 413,000 employees in 2025. Bosch's April 2026 results described e-bikes as an established core business where it invests in technology and service and avoids price wars with Asian suppliers, while the wider Mobility sector's EBIT margin fell to 1.8% in 2025.
Drive units are built in Miskolc, Hungary, where Bosch opened a 20 million euro e-bike drive building in 2011 and set up production and logistics in 2012. A second plant in rented halls at Petrovany, near Prešov in Slovakia, was planned for about 400 staff with production from late 2023; Bosch wound it down from March 2024, saying e-bike demand had not grown as expected and that Miskolc had enough capacity. In January 2026 Bosch took full ownership of MAGURA Bosch Parts & Services, its former service and spare-parts joint venture with the German brake maker Magura.

The fifth-generation Performance Line CX launched in September 2024 at the same 85 Nm and 600 W as its predecessor, with a patented freewheel that stops gearbox rattle and almost 100 g less weight; BIKE Magazin measured drag with assist off at 9.1 W against 13.8 W for the fourth generation. A free over-the-air update in July 2025 lifted it to 100 Nm, 750 W and 400% support and added an eMTB+ mode, and the CX-R, unveiled in May 2025 to replace the CX Race, shipped with the same figures and a Race mode with longer Extended Boost. Performance Upgrade 2.0, released through the eBike Flow app on 4 May 2026, lets the bike maker allow peaks of up to 120 Nm on the CX and CX-R, with at most 100 Nm in steady output, raises support to 600% below 15 km/h, makes Extended Boost adjustable on a 1-10 scale and adds a Drivetrain Tensioner function from mid-2026.
The June 2025 launch redesigned the Performance Line, 400 g lighter at 2.8 kg, and rebuilt the Cargo Line and Performance Line Speed on CX hardware at 750 W. The Hub Line, shown in June 2026, is Bosch's first hub motor for e-bikes and works with electronic and automatic shifting; it competes with Mahle's rear hubs on city and road bikes. The 2026 Active Line Plus is 17% smaller and 0.5 kg lighter than before, and Bosch claims a 50% lower manufacturing CO2 footprint from part-recycled aluminum and recycled plastics.
Smart System
Batteries From 250 Wh to 800 Wh, Eight Displays and One App Run on the Smart System
The Smart System, launched in 2021, links motor, battery, display, ABS and phone app on one network and takes software updates over the air. The older Bosch eBike System 2 stays in production for some models.
| Battery | Format | Capacity (Wh) | Weight (kg) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PowerMore 250 | Range extender, bottle-cage mount | 250 | 1.5 | 36 V, 6.7 Ah; adds about 60% range to SX bikes |

ABS and security
Bosch Built the First Production E-Bike ABS and Locks the Bike From the Phone
ABS and theft protection set Bosch apart from motor-only suppliers; several features need the paid Flow+ subscription.
| Feature | What it does | Requires |
|---|---|---|
| eBike ABS | Front-wheel ABS with rear-wheel lift detection; Cargo, Touring, Allroad and Trail modes | Bike fitted at the factory |
| eBike ABS Pro | eMTB version for trail riding, launched 2024; works with Shimano XTR, Deore XT, MT420 and MT200, Magura Louise Elite and Gustav Elite, and TRP EVO Pro brakes since 2025 | Bike fitted at the factory |
| eBike Lock | Switches off motor assist until the phone, acting as a digital key, unlocks it | Free eBike Flow app |
| Battery Lock | Locks a parked battery so it will not power another Smart System bike; covers DualBattery and PowerMore 250 | Flow+ |
| eBike Alarm | Beeps and flashes the lights when the locked bike moves; phone alerts and GPS tracking | Flow+ and ConnectModule |

US market and legal classes
Bosch Covers EU Pedelecs, US Class 1 and Class 3, and EU Speed Pedelecs
The motor version and its programmed cutoff speed decide the bike's legal class. Bosch eBike Systems Americas has run US sales and service since 2014.
| Class | Limits | Bosch units |
|---|---|---|
| EU pedelec (EN 15194) | 250 W rated, assist to 25 km/h | Performance Line CX, CX-R, PX, SX, Performance Line, Cargo Line, Active Line Plus, Active Line, Hub Line |
| US Class 1 | 750 W, pedal assist to 20 mph | 20 mph versions such as the Performance Line on the Gazelle Medeo T10 and Ultimate C380 |
| US Class 3 | 750 W, pedal assist to 28 mph | Performance Line Speed (85 Nm, eBike System 2 and Smart System), Performance Line Sport (75 or 90 Nm) |
| EU speed pedelec (L1e-B) | Up to 4 kW, assist to 45 km/h, type approval | Performance Line Speed, 100 Nm and 750 W since 2025 |
Bosch's 750 W peak sits at the US federal e-bike limit, and its US product pages note that the Performance Line Speed delivers slightly less than 750 W for compliance. The Gazelle Eclipse, launched in March 2024, was the first US bike to pair the Smart System with 28 mph assist, and Trek's Charter+ city bikes, launched in February 2026, use the Performance Line Sport as full Class 3 bikes. In Gazelle's US range the Performance Line is the strongest Class 1 drive, while the Performance Line Speed versions carry a plus sign in the model name. Class 4 E-Bikes covers machines above these limits, a segment Bosch does not supply.
